How To Play Pistol Whip Custom Songs
So, as usual, start the game and hit start at the first screen.
If it’s been a while since you last played Pistol Whip you might be put into the tutorial immediately, but luckily you can skip that if you like, or play through it for a refresher on how to play the game.
Now for the fun part, playing Pistol Whip custom songs.
In the main menu look at the big center screen labelled “Start” where you’d normally start a song in Arcade, Campaign, or Contracts mode. You’ll see a new button in the bottom right, “Remixes.”
The Pistol Whip developers have made custom songs available in the game. You don’t have to change any of the game files or do anything like that. The remixes menu will be available when you start the game.
Once you go into the remixes menu you’ll be treated to a ton of options for custom songs made by the community to try.
There are all sorts of themes and music to choose from. Even songs you might have heard before and always thought would make for a great Pistol Whip map.
Well now Pistol Whip modders have been making custom maps for these songs and adding them to the game.
If you want some help finding a good song there are some filtering options below by your feet.
To try one find one that you like and click on it and its detail page will appear with some cover art, the song used, and a description of the custom song.
Now you might go straight for the play button and wonder why it’s greyed out and not working. Well that’s because you need to subscribe to the song to play it.
So hit the subscribe button in the bottom left of the song’s description page.
You will, of course, need an internet connection to do this. The Pistol Whip mod will automatically download to your game.
Once it’s complete you can hit play and enjoy the Pistol Whip custom song!
Oh, and just like with Pistol Whip’s main catalog in Arcade mode, you can add all of the modifiers and use any of Pistol Whip’s many choices of equipment by selecting them in the window on your left.
Of course always keep in mind that these custom songs are made by hobbyists and modders for fun.
So even if the song is great (and it might not be), the quality and difficulty of the level may vary.
For your level of skill at Pistol Whip some might be extremely hard or extremely easy, and some Pistol Whip custom songs have maps that aren’t very detailed.
Though you can always make Pistol Whip mods harder with modifiers if you want a really intense experience.
Of course there are also a ton of custom songs that are fantastic and you’ll come back to time and time again.
You can always view the custom songs that you are subscribed to by hitting the “Subscribed” button on the left side of the Remix menu.
It is so fantastic to see the great work that community members are doing, and there are some really fantastic new levels in Pistol Whip because of the support for custom songs.
The best part is they are super easy to download and play! That’s something a lot of VR Rhythm and Music games don’t have.
Make Your Own Pistol Whip Custom Songs With Pistol Mix
If you want to mod Pistol Whip yourself and create a fantastic custom song that you’ve always wanted to make, well now you can with Pistol Mix.
The update to the game that included the Remixes menu also included a release of this fantastic mod tool from the developer. With it you can make Pistol Whip mods and Pistol Whip custom songs pretty easily.
Now it’s simple and fun to make your own custom songs with Pistol Mix and upload them to the Remixes menu to play yourself, share with others, or see who in the community decides to try it.
While we won’t go in depth on Pistol Mix here, there’s a fantastic starter guide if you’re interested to try it out and make your own custom songs in Pistol Whip.
Well that’s it for how to play and make custom songs in Pistol Whip. Feel free to come back later and comment about which Pistol Whip custom song is your favorite so that we can give it a try and enjoy it too. Have fun!

Who doesn’t love music? Who doesn’t love music… and VR? Well these VR Rhythm Games are also VR Music Games that have huge collections of fantastic music and beats for you to play along to. Since you get to use your whole body in Virtual Reality there are a ton of great ways to enjoy music and rhythm in VR by actually moving your body along with the music. VR Rhythm Games and VR Music Games are a great way to enjoy music and move along with it.
All of these games have fantastic music and encourage rhythm in their gameplay. These are the Best VR Rhythm Games and VR Music Games.
Pistol Whip - VR Rhythm Games And VR Music Games
Pistol Whip is an absolute classic VR Rhythm Game because of its fantastically unique premise and expertly designed and tailored levels. With a variety of intense music to choose from, Pistol Whip quickly established itself as one of the premier VR Rhythm Games.
In Pistol Whip you are a John Wick style one person army who is attacked by waves of enemies as they spawn in front of you, run to a position, and then shoot at you. You’ve got to shoot them and dodge the bullets that they shoot at you You’re constantly propelled forward through the level and so the enemies keep spawning and you keep going forwards whether or not you can keep up.
Each level is unique and accompanied by its own track from a fantastic selection of mostly synth inspired music with a lot of bass. The music pairs so well with the gameplay, and that is what makes Pistol Whip one of the top VR Music Games. It’s also a VR Rhythm game because you are rewarded with a higher score for shooting enemies on the beat. Oh, and you’ll also need to dodge walls from time to time.
When you get into the groove of Pistol Whip, it’s a fantastic feeling. Ducking and dodging while you snap off shots is incredible, you might even feel like John Wick. The Rhythm and Music combine very well in this mixture between bullet hell and rail shooter that makes for a fantastic VR rhythm game. Oh, and if you’re considering exercise in Virtual Reality as well then Pistol Whip can make for a great workout.
Beat Saber - VR Rhythm Games And VR Music Games
What list of VR Music Games or VR Rhythm Games would be complete without Beat Saber? If you’ve ever heard of VR gaming before then you’ve probably heard about this game, and for very good reasons. Beat Saber was an early innovator just like Pistol Whip, but with a much wider selection of music and the ability to add your own custom maps.
In Beat Saber you stand still as blocks of different colors come towards you. Each of your hands is holding a saber made of light, a lightsaber basically. You have to swing the appropriately colored saber to hit the same colored block in a direction that matches the symbol on the block. Sounds easy, right? Well it gets less easy when the blocks are flying at you at what seems like a hundred miles an hour, and then you also have to dodge out of the way of walls of light.
Beat Saber is considered a classic for good reason, and is even considered to be good exercise by many. Overall this game is a fantastic VR Rhythm Game and VR Music Game for its wide range of musical options and gameplay that makes you move with the beat.
Moon Rider - VR Rhythm Games And VR Music Games
Want Beat Saber with a different look and different songs? Then try Moon Rider, it’s also a very well made game, but lacks a bit of the distinct look that Beat Saber has. Still, if you’re a huge Beat Saber fan and want something similar, give Moon Rider a look.
Oh, and Moon Rider is free and includes a punching mode as well! You can also just chill as the music is visualized around you. It’s a great experience. Moon Rider can be played through their website.
Ragnarock - VR Rhythm Games And VR Music Games
Want to be a Viking in your VR Rhythm game? Well that’s what you are in Ragnarock, a VR Music game where you are the drummer aboard a Viking longship.
In this VR game you have to beat drums to go along with the beat of the song that you’re playing, and instruments don’t get much more rhythmic than the drums. This is an excellent use of VR motion controls as you guide your huge Viking hammers to beat the drums along with the beat of the song.
Ragnarock combines this fun premise with some inspired visuals as you sail down idyllic waterways through ancient forests and ruins. More than most other VR Music games, Ragnarock uses interesting environments to create a unique backdrop to the gameplay that matches its premise.
It’s a ton of fun, and can be awfully hard, but if you master it you feel like a true rockstar as you hit your drums to match the runes floating towards them.
Audioshield - VR Rhythm Games And VR Music Games
Audioshield doesn’t involve shooting like Pistol Whip, or hitting things to a beat like Beat Saber, but it does match your actions in the game to the music you are listening to very well. In Audioshield the music takes the form of these differently colored blobs that fly at you.
Just like in Beat Saber, in Audioshield you need to match the color of those blobs with the color of the shields on your arms to block them. Instead of attacking something, you’re defending, but that doesn’t make Audioshield a passive experience. It can be really intense, even in the world of VR Rhythm games.
You will even have to combine your shields together sometimes to block certain blobs, though it does lack the need to dodge and duck out of the way occasionally that Beat Saber and Pistol Whip bring to the table. Still, Audioshield is a good time and makes it easy to import your own music into the game. Audioshield will automatically create a map to match the track you’ve imported, so in this VR Music game you can very easily add your own music to jam out to.
OhShape - VR Rhythm Games And VR Music Games
If you want VR Rhythm games that are more focused on whole body movement and dancing along to the beat, then OhShape is what you’re looking for. Instead of just swinging your arms or playing an instrument, OhShape has you moving your whole body to complete the level.
In OhShape a number of obstacles fly at you to accompany the rhythm of a wide range of upbeat and intense musical tracks. You have to move your body so that you fit into the shape made by walls, or dodge completely out of the way of big yellow blocks. There are also coins to collect for bonus points.
Just like in many of these VR Music Games, the different obstacles fly towards you to go along with the beat. When you hit your stride and start to dodge obstacle after obstacle, collect the coins, and fit your body into the walls that rush towards you then you end up doing a sort of dance.
OhShape is really a VR Dancing game as well as a VR Rhythm game, and just like any good dance the movements of your body that the game has you doing go along very well with the music.
Maestro VR - VR Rhythm Games And VR Music Games
Maybe you want a calmer VR Music game experience. A more classical musical journey to enjoy in VR. Well then get ready to conduct your own orchestra in Maestro VR.
In this VR Music Game you are the maestro, and you must use both of your hands to conduct an orchestra of classical musicians to a number of great classical music pieces. You determine the tempo of the song, but also must use your off hand to instruct the musicians to crescendo, diminuendo, or begin playing.
Maestro VR can be hard to get a handle on… because being a conductor is actually really difficult. Though that’s only a skill issue as the controls are very responsive, and the feeling of getting a knack for the job and really mastering the music feels fantastic. You really do feel like you have your own orchestra in this VR Music Game.
There is also a very similar game called Maestro: The Masterclass on the Oculus App Lab.
Smash Drums - VR Rhythm Games And VR Music Games
Want to be a drummer, but don’t have a drumkit? Well then Smash Drums is a very guided VR Drumming experience. You have to hit the notes by hitting the appropriate piece of the drum kit as those notes appear, kind of like Guitar Hero but for drums. Though unlike the drumming version of Guitar Hero, you can play Smash Drums in VR and don’t need to invest all that money and space into a physical drumkit.
While hitting VR drums will always lack the tactile feedback of hitting a physical object like with a real drumkit, Smash Drums does a great job of taking the Guitar Hero formula of varied songs, increasing level difficulty, and satisfying beats and notes to hit in this VR Rhythm game.
Keeping the beat and hitting the notes feels as satisfying as it ever did, and Smash Drums is a great addition to the catalog of VR Music games by taking a classic, putting it in Virtual Reality, and executing on its gameplay very smoothly and very well.
AUDICA - VR Rhythm Games And VR Music Games
AUDICA is a lot like Pistol Whip in that, instead of playing an instrument, you’re shooting guns along with the rhythm. What differs it from Pistol Whip is that in AUDICA you’re not shooting at waves of faceless enemies and dodging their projectiles, you’re shooting at the actual beats of the song.
You’ve got two guns of different colors, and as targets fly towards you, you have to shoot at them with the gun that is their color to get points. Though AUDICA becomes a lot more involved than that very quickly. This VR Music game is great because of how the targets are chained together, sometimes you will shoot one and a long line of other targets will appear behind it in rapid succession that you have to gun down with rapid fire.
All of these targets appear with timing that matches the rhythm of the song, and so the experience is still kind of akin to playing an instrument in that it requires precise timing, but it still has the physical actions of a VR shooting game while being more closely tied to the music itself than Pistol Whip is. Though it lacks the dodging and constant reactiveness needed by Pistol Whip.
There’s even big grey blobs that fly towards you that you need to smash away to break up the song. AUDICA is another fresh take on the genre to add to the list of VR Music games, and is great for being unique but also familiar enough to easily get the hang of.
Synth Riders - VR Rhythm Games And VR Music Games
Synth Riders definitely has a lot of synth music in it, and often feels like you’re… riding a train of some kind. It’s a difficult feeling to describe.
In Synth Riders your hands are balls of different colors, and balls of different colors fly at you. You need to match the your hand of one color to the balls of the same color as they come at you, oh and sometimes the balls are yellow and you need to combine your hands. If you’ve been reading every game on this list so far this doesn’t sound very special, does it?
Well what Synth Riders brings to the table is a very fast pace right out of the gate, and some of the most intense synthetic music of any of these VR Music games. While the premise of Synth Riders is the same as many others, it differentiates itself by its dedication to synth music and level design.
Instead of moving your hand quickly to chop a block, shoot an enemy, or block a block like in other titles on this list, Synth Riders feels like doing an airplane impression with your hand by gliding it along the line of balls that you’re meant to hit. The levels have a flow to them that’s a little bit like doing Tai Chi. Your hands flow and hit the balls, and while the levels emphasize rhythm less than these other VR Rhythm games, Synth Riders has a very unique feel to its gameplay. Oh, and the cyberpunk city levels look very cool.
Audio Trip - VR Rhythm Games And VR Music Games
Want Synth Riders but with different music made by a different studio? That’s Audio Trip, it’s more of the same sort of gameplay with very similar gameplay rhythms to Synth Riders, and which one is better comes out mostly to personal preference. If you only want to try one, then try whichever one looks cooler, or if you like triangles more than spheres go with Audio Trip.
Against - VR Rhythm Games And VR Music Games
Out of all VR Rhythm games on this list none combines a setting and story so closely with the music and levels as well as Against does. The gameplay is also phenomenal and constantly changes itself to be fresh and completely different, even in the same level.
In Against you are a detective who is on the trail of the powerful Dr. Vice. The game explains its story with comic book style panels that flash in front of you as the story goes on. It’s nothing that will blow your mind, but does add to the levels to give you a sense of progression through them, and the art style feeds into the look of the game.
Each level in Against is, as you might expect in a VR Music game, accompanied by a fantastic soundtrack. At points you stop and at points you glide forward, and you are almost constantly assaulted by a tide of enemies. From regular crooks wielding crowbars, to evil looking crooks wielding shotguns, and even demonic snakes, there are a ton of threats to overcome in Against.
You overcome them by slashing, shooting, and punching to the music as your enemies charge towards you and attack. In that way its kind of like Pistol Whip, but with an entirely different musical selection and an interesting noir art style. Though what differentiates Against from these other VR Rhythm games is how your weapons change. Sometimes during a level you will pause and you gain a different weapon to use.
So your entire style of fighting through the level can change right in the middle of it. One minute you’re shooting, and the next you’re punching or slashing. It’s a ton of fun and keeps the gameplay constantly fresh. Oh, and there are wall runs and fantastic jumps. You have a lot of options for what way you want to advance forward in the level. That choice elevates Against to a whole new level of VR Rhythm.
Paradiddle - VR Rhythm Games And VR Music Games
Want a less gamey and realistic VR Drumming game? Well then Paradiddle is the VR Music game for you.
In Paradiddle it’s just you, the music, and a drumset. You can choose to play the drums with no notes or music to tell you what to do, just jam with no scores and no gaminess. Though if you don’t know any of the songs and you’re not a professional drummer you can still play Paradiddle in the classic Guitar Hero style mode with notes telling you what piece of your drumset to hit just like in Smash Drums.
While Paradiddle looks less impressive visually, it does benefit from a more expanded music catalog and most importantly a larger drumset for you to use. It’s a more in depth sort of VR Rhythm game when compared to Smash Drums, and comes more highly recommended if you’re considering using VR to learn how to drum for real, or want a deeper and harder to master experience than Smash Drums.
Well those are the 13 best VR Rhythm games and VR Music Games. If you want to jam out in Virtual Reality then you’ll definitely find something you will love here. Enjoy!

We’ve spoken about Thrill of the Fight before, and to this day it is still the Best VR Game for Exercise. It’s the most active and the most fun. Pistol Whip
Pistol Whip is a game that not only gets you panting and sweating and encourages you to do a ton of squats, but it’s also a great way to feel like really awesome once you get the hang of it. Turning your whole body around to dodge incoming bullets and then snapping off a couple of shots to take down an enemy, all in the span of a split second, feels really cool. You might even feel like John Wick when playing Pistol Whip. All while you get one of the Best VR Workouts out there.
So what makes Pistol Whip one of the Best VR Games for Exercise? It’s the intensity of movement as you’re dodging incoming enemy rounds. Pistol Whip, with the right settings, is basically a 3D bullet hell shooter. That means you’ll have a ton of enemy rounds flying towards your head, and you need to move your head out of the way to dodge them. This involves a lot of moving your entire body so that the rounds miss you, and especially squatting. Sometimes you might even have to jump a little to avoid incoming fire and stay alive.
Oh, but don’t think you only receive punishment when playing Pistol Whip. You’ve got a pistol yourself, and what makes this VR Workout so fun is that you also shoot back at the enemies that try to take you down. The better you get at Pistol Whip then the more you end up doing an intricate dance of dodging and counter fire that feels really satisfying.
If you’re interested in playing Pistol Whip from this list of the Best VR Workout Games, then check out our article on the settings you’ll want to use to make this game great VR Exercise.
OhShape
Want a game where you have to move your whole body quickly and intensely like Pistol Whip, but don’t want to have to deal with all the guns and shooting? Then your choice out of this list of the Best VR Games for Exercise might be OhShape.
What makes OhShape so much fun is not only the arrangement of different songs and levels to play through, but moving your entire body to the beat of those songs to match the shapes that come your way. Dodge out of the way of Big Yellow Blocks, collect coins with your hands, and move your body so that it fits the exact shape of the blue walls that come your way.
OhShape is a VR Exercise game that really shows off the sorts of exercise that can only be done in VR. It’s like dancing with a point system. Normally you can’t dance too wrong, but OhShape feels like a gamified dance that you have to follow exactly or you’ll lose. It’s a ton of fun, and offers the sort of full body movement workout that Pistol Whip does, but with the focus purely on moving your body around without having to worry about all that shooting.
OhShape’s great premise and soundtrack makes it a ton of fun, and that’s why it’s one of our 5 Best VR Games for Exercise. It’s also really easy to make OhShape a very intense game just by selecting a harder difficulty mode, there’s no need to mess around with settings and modifiers each time you play it like in Pistol Whip, making it a solid alternative for VR Exercise.
Until You Fall
Want a VR Workout Game that feels a little more like an actual game? Well then Until You Fall might be just the VR Exercise Game that you’re looking for. Out of all of the Best VR Workout Games listed here, Until You Fall does the best at combining gameplay that feels more like a traditional video game with the intense movements of your body that makes for good and fun VR Exercise in a VR fighting game with RPG elements.
Until You Fall is an action fantasy roguelike set in an ancient kingdom overcome by a strange crystalline evil that turned your once proud people into monstrous versions of themselves. You, as the kingdom’s last defender, must fight your way through it to defeat the evil that has infested your home.
Since Until You Fall is a roguelike, you need to fight your way to the end without falling yourself, and pulling that off is the great hook of the game. You’ll need to swing your arms fully to attack (no just flicking your wrist like in Beat Saber) while also dodging and parrying incoming blows. The result is that in Until You Fall you’ll need to learn to move very quickly with your arms and legs to avoid getting hit, while also working your arms to attack. The game only gets harder the further you go.
If you hit certain milestones then you get more options for your arsenal, and can further upgrade your weapons with better stats using points that you get each time you fail. The progression is very solid for a roguelike, and keeps you coming back for another upgrade to your favorite weapon.
Until You Fall’s greatest strength other than it’s progression is its use of both of your hands in its action combat, and its way of encouraging you to move. That’s what makes Until You Fall not only a fun Virtual Reality game, but a VR Workout.
Until You Fall combines VR Exercise with fun customization and gameplay. Mix and match the weapons you take in either hand. Some are slower, some are faster, and see which special abilities combine for the greatest effect. Until You Fall gives you some opportunities to plan and think about your character build, while also being one of the best VR Workout Games.
Audioshield
Audioshield, as the name implies, is another game that combines music and VR Exercise. It’s also arguably the most straightforward rhythm based VR Exercise Game on this list of the Best VR Exercise Games.
That’s because what you do in Audioshield is move your arms to block balls coming your way. Each of your arms is a shield, both with different colors. Block the incoming ball with the shield of the right color to win! Pretty straightforward, and just like Pistol Whip or OhShape the activity you’ll have to do to win in Audioshield can range from easy to hard.
Varying difficulties and songs are varyingly hard, and the harder the difficulty then the greater the workout. When the difficulty is high then Audioshield is a great VR Workout Game. You’ll be sweating, and your arms will be heavy after you’re done. There’s even an option to add custom songs to use your favorite tracks ingame.
Though while Audioshield makes the cut as one of the Best VR Games for Exercise, it does have some drawbacks. Namely that you’ll be stationary and not have to move your feet. Out of all of the Best VR Workout Games listed here, Audioshield is the only one that doesn’t involve moving your feet at all. That being said, this is a fun VR Exercise game where you can lose yourself in the rhythm and get a great VR Workout at the same time.
Thanks for reading our list of the 5 Best VR Games For Exercise. Now that you know what the Best VR Workout Games are pick the one you like best and have a great VR workout! If you want more information on working out in VR, check out our VR Weight Loss Tips and Guide here.

Want to feel like John Wick having epic gunfights against a ton of opponents and beat the odds will skill and precision? Well then this list of the 3 Best John Wick VR Games will give you that feeling in the most immersive gaming medium out there, Virtual Reality. You’ll never feel more like John Wick than when you’re playing these games.
Half Life: Alyx - Gunman Contracts
Half-Life: Alyx is considered to be one of the best PCVR shooters out there. It combines a great story, fantastic atmosphere, and great gunplay in an experience that is easy to learn. Half-Life: Alyx also has great modding tools, and a modder called ANB_Seth made a fantastic mod for the game that is the ultimate John Wick VR experience.
It’s called Gunman Contracts, and can be easily installed through the Steam Workshop if you own Half-Life: Alyx. In Gunman Contracts you’re a mercenary with a trusty pistol and a goal that takes you through hordes of goons armed with submachine guns.
Your ammunition is infinite, and all that you have to focus on is fighting your way through these hordes of enemies to your goal. The gunplay is tight and thrilling in Gunman Contracts, and each scenario of the mod takes place in a very John Wick sort of setting. A dingy backstreet bar with dark secrets in the basement, or an art gallery in a hotel run by a criminal.
The sci-fi enemies of Half-Life: Alyx are replaced with goons who react quickly to your presence and are a ton of fun to have a gunfight with. This mod rewards quick thinking, speed, and precision. You’ll feel like John Wick when playing this VR game as you go from room to room firing your pistol.
Pistol Whip
Pistol Whip is a fantastic rhythm based VR game. In it you have a pistol (or two if you want) and are guided forward through a highly stylized environment as enemies appear and try to shoot you down. Music plays the whole time, and the tracks are great too. It feels like you’re John Wick in a movie and the soundtrack is playing during your action scene.
What really makes Pistol Whip a John Wick VR game is the epic dance that you do when advancing through its levels. As the enemies shoot at you, you shoot them back. You constantly need to dodge the projectiles that are coming your way while trying to fire back accurately with your own pistol and reload.
When you begin to master Pistol Whip you feel like John Wick, or like you’re doing some gun-fu. The constant dodging and firing makes you feel like some sort of gun fighting ninja in Virtual Reality. The music helps with this a lot, and every level plays out like an action scene from a John Wick movie. Each level requires precise timing, movement of your body, and precision. That is, if the difficulty setting requires it.
The one downside to Pistol Whip is that the opening difficulty of the game doesn’t quite give you this feeling of being a John Wick assassin. You will probably want to get into Arcade mode and turn the difficulty up with modifiers so that the experience involves a lot of dodging and shooting rather than standing in place and lazily lifting your arm to fire a shot every few seconds. Check out this guide to find out more.
Superhot VR
Superhot VR is another fantastic action based VR game that will make you feel like John Wick in Virtual Reality. Unlike Pistol Whip, Superhot VR gives you intense action and forces you to do incredible feats of shooting and fighting right out of the gate. You don’t even need to be particularly fast yourself to pull them off.
This is because Superhot VR pauses time as long as you don’t move. Time only moves as fast as your head and hands do. So if you stand still nothing will happen, but whenever you move, bullets, objects, and enemies move as well. This means you have plenty of time to decide your next move before you do it, or you can just move slowly. So the whole fight plays out like a slow motion action scene with you deciding the pace.
This John Wick VR game is a ton of fun and will definitely make you feel like an elite assassin like John Wick himself. Each encounter plays out like an action movie sequence. No more bullets in your pistol? Throw it at an enemy and grab another. No gun at all? Throw a nearby shuriken at your enemies. Enemy coming at you with a knife? If weight loss is on your mind and you’re wondering how to use VR for an enjoyable weight loss experience, then look no further than this Oculus weight loss guide. Of course you don’t need an Oculus Quest 2 to see Virtual Reality weight loss results, and no matter what HMD you use you can see fantastic results when using VR for exercise and weight loss.
Why The Oculus For Weight Loss?
While you don’t necessarily need an Oculus Quest 2 to see VR weight loss results, using a standalone VR headset like the Meta Quest 2 will give you much greater range of movement, because you won’t need to constantly have a cable tethered to your head while working out in VR.
An Oculus Quest 1 also works as would any other standalone VR headset like the Pico 4. Being able to freely move vigorously is key to a comfortable VR weight loss experience when using VR gaming as exercise.
How Does VR Help With Weight Loss?
Before we get into the details, do note that we are not medical professionals, and that everyone’s body is different. If you are really serious about weight loss then make sure to consult your doctor about your current weight and any underlying medical conditions you may have which might affect your weight loss journey.
That being said, VR is a fantastic way to lose weight by providing a fun and interesting way to exercise. Not everyone likes exercise, and that’s okay. With new advancements in VR technology we now have better and better ways to make moving our bodies a fun and enjoyable experience even for those that are not so inclined.
That’s how Virtual Reality helps you with weight loss, by providing a fun way to burn calories and build muscle. Keep in mind that proper diet and portioning of meals is also a very important factor in losing weight, as well as good nutrition. In this article we’ll be focusing on using standalone, untethered VR with the Oculus Quest 2 to provide you with good and fun exercise that you’ll be looking forward to instead of dreading.
VR Exercise Games With The Oculus Quest 2 - Upper Body
So you’ve got your Quest 2 or other standalone VR headset and you’re wondering where to begin. Naturally we will start with some VR workout games. There’s quite a few, like Supernatural, that are specifically targeted to weight loss fanatics and those who want good exercise. Still, there are much better options that feel less like exercise and more like fun. For instance, do you like boxing?
If you do then there’s a great boxing experience that makes for a fantastic workout in Thrill Of the Fight. Unlike most other VR boxing games you’ll find that Thrill Of the Fight is a very intense experience that forces you to push yourself physically in order to win. Fast punches and quick movement are encouraged in this game, and you will easily find yourself panting and sweating when trying to defeat an opponent. It’s easy to get so lost in the fight that you don’t even realize how much exercise you’re doing.
Thrill Of the Fight is great for working on your arms and cardio. All of the movement makes you work your heart and lungs a lot, and all of the punching will make your arms sore and tired. If you have a big enough play area you can even move around the ring and move your legs a little, though it’s not too much of a leg workout unless you duck and weave a lot.
When playing Thrill Of the Fight be very careful of where you set your guardian boundary so that you don’t punch a wall, furniture, pet, or person. This goes for all VR games. As for yourself, since you’re not punching a physical target it is possible to overextend your arms and pull a muscle or injure your shoulder. So be careful to keep your punches close and not overextend your arms.
If Thrill Of the Fight sounds interesting and you want more background then check out our other article on it here. If you’ve already tried Thrill Of the Fight and want more intense fighting games in VR then Virtual Boxing League gives a less polished but also very enjoyable boxing experience. Dragon Fist: VR Kung Fu is also a lot of fun, though it tends to be a little less intense than these two boxing games, you’ll break a sweat at least though.
VR Exercise Games With The Oculus Quest 2 - Lower Body
While fighting games make for great upper arm workouts and cardio, what about your legs and lower body? They’ll need some love too. While a lot of VR games that are good for exercise and weight loss make you move your legs, there are a few which will really blast those leg muscles and give you a good workout. Chief among these is Pistol Whip.
If you’ve played some Pistol Whip or seen videos about it, you might not have thought that this would be a great game for Virtual Reality weight loss. That’s because Pistol Whip is incredibly easy and slow by default. Just like in Thrill Of the Fight, you’ll need to up the difficulty to really push yourself and get a great leg workout.
Pistol Whip can be really intense because it makes you do a ton of squats. Squats are the best single all around exercise for your legs, and Pistol Whip makes you squat a lot at high difficulties. By setting the difficulty to Hard and putting on some modifiers that make more bullets come at you, you’ll find that your legs will be burning after each Pistol Whip session.
To dodge incoming bullets you’ll need to quickly squad, duck, and contort your body. This gives your legs and even abs a great workout. It’s great cardio too, because all of the fast movements the game forces you to do will get your heart pumping and lungs working.
For more specific tips on how to turn Pistol Whip into an intense workout, check out our Pistol Whip exercise guide here. There are some other games that are great for your legs too. If you love to dance then an intense session of Dance Central VR can be great for your legs. OhShape is a lesser known game that makes you move your legs a lot, and also your arms for more of a hybrid workout.
VR Weight Loss Tips and VR Exercise Tips
These aren’t the only games for VR exercise, if you want more options go to the “Have Fun” tip below for a big list of other games. Now that you’ve got some options for Virtual Reality games to play to get some fun exercise during your VR exercise, here are some more tips and advice.
Have Fun
The best way to get more exercise, burn more calories, and build more muscle, is to have fun. That’s the whole point of VR exercise and why Virtual Reality so so great for weight loss. It makes exercise more fun and makes you want to keep coming back to do it. So make sure you’re having a good time, and if you don’t have as much fun with the games in this article, look a little further. Here’s a brief list of other games that we haven’t covered here that could make for very fun exercise:
Audioshield
Beat Saber (Make sure to swing your whole arm and not just your wrist, or it’s not exercise at all)
BoxVR
Supernatural (Paid Subscription though, a little too pricey unless you really love it)
Holoball
Eleven Table Tennis VR (Great for an after workout cooldown, but not much exercise on it’s own)
FitXR (A lot like a traditional workout)
HOLOFIT (Rowing in VR!)
Ragnarok (Decent for arms)
Until You Fall (Not the most intense either but a lot of fun and can be some exercise for your arms and legs if you play it really quickly)
Get The Biggest Playspace Possible
It is possible to play most VR Fitness games using a stationary guardian boundary, which is basically just a little circle that you can’t step out of, but you won’t have the most fun you could playing this way. Utilize the biggest play area that you can with a Roomscale Boundary so that you have more room to move around. More movement is key, and freeing yourself to move your entire body naturally while playing will not only get you better exercise and weight loss results, but also make everything more enjoyable.
When you’re picking a playspace though, be careful that no natural sunlight hits the lenses of your VR headset. Natural Light will burn the lenses and leave dead pixels on it that will ruin your immersion and enjoyment. Also make sure that your playspace will be clear of pets and other people, and doesn’t have furniture or objects on the floor around you.
Keep Sweat Out Of Your Eyes and VR Headset
Sweat can be a big problem when you’re wearing a computer on your face and trying to exercise. You’ll find that sweat will pool on your face where it meets the foam cover of your headset. This will make the headset slip on your face and make the whole experience uncomfortable. Not to mention that this sweat can build up in the foam and increase bacteria on your skin that may cause skin problems like acne.
To help with this consider getting a new face cover that is made of silicone or another sweat repelling material. This will keep your headset from smelling and building bacteria. There are plenty of different ones out there, but the most reliable choice is VR Cover, that offers new facial interfaces and accessories not just for the Oculus Quest 2, but basically every VR headset out there.
Make sure to clean your face cover with disinfectant when you’re done exercising (but don’t get any on your lenses) and wipe your face and face cover with a clean towel periodically when exercising in VR.
Avoid Injury
Injuring yourself from exercising not only effects your life outside of weight loss and fitness, but also means that you’ll have to take a break from exercise until you heal. Injuring yourself will cause you to lose more exercise and fun VR play time overall. So avoid injury at all costs by making sure not to overextend yourself or hit a wall or object with your hand. Keep steady and don’t fall over either. If a muscle or joint starts hurting then give it a rest. If you ever have a persistent pain while doing VR weight loss or any exercise at all then consult a medical professional.
Try Adding A Little Traditional Exercise
To hit more muscle groups and have a more complete workout you might want to add some traditional exercise to your VR weight loss regimen after you get into the habit of exercise. Exercises that utilize your body weight like pushups and lunges can be a great way to supplement your VR weight loss adventure. You can try having some fun with a VR workout and then moving on to some other exercise, or do some other exercises in between VR sessions to keep your weight loss exciting and different.
Add Weights For Even Harder Exercise
If you’ve been using VR for weight loss for a while and don’t feel the burn quite like you used to you can enhance your Virtual Reality exercise even further by adding some weights. Wrist weights like these here are great because they include a thumbstrap that will keep them from slipping off of your wrists while you’re playing. Ankle weights like these can make movement harder and more intense as well.
Exercise Consistently and Watch Your Diet
If you want to see weight loss results when exercising with Virtual Reality, then you’ll only ever see progress when you exercise consistently. A little exercise every day of the week is better than a lot of exercise one day of the week. Exercise and weight loss is as much a series of habits as it is your desire and drive to do it. It can be helpful to exercise at the same time every day, or to start with just a little bit of exercise and work your way up. Consistency is more important than immediate results, though consistency will bring results if you keep slowly increasing the intensity.
Also keep in mind that all the VR exercise in the world won’t make you lose weight alone. Getting enough sleep and having a proper diet are also very important. Unfortunately there’s no Virtual Reality app yet that can help you with those, though there are plenty that make for a good workout.
Well there you have it, a guide and tips for VR weight loss by using VR for fun exercise. If you’ve read this and found Virtual Reality to be helpful on your weight loss journey then please leave a comment. It would be great to hear from everyone that VR has helped become more fit and lose weight.
